Rusutsu near Sapporo is arguably the best ski area in Japan. Sapporo is about the same
latitude as Albany, New York and gets huge amounts of what Easterners would call lake effect
snow off the Sea of Japan. Because of the cold temperatures (it generally never gets above
freezing during the winter) they get the miracle of low altitude powder. The snow is very fluffy
and never icy, but skiers have no altitude problems.
