The Eiffel Tower was considered a monstrosity by many Parisians when it was first built and
there was strong public sentiment to tear it down as soon as the Exposition of 1889 was over.
Luckily they did not get their way. The very first honored visitors climbed the stairs (there were
no elevators at that point) but no one made it to the top. I'm sure the height of 986 feet or 300
meters had something to do with that, but supposedly none of the initial visitors had any
confidence that it would stay standing. A TV antenna has been added, making its height now
321 meters or 1052 feet. Fairy lights were added for the millennium but were so popular that
they remain a permanent fixture.
